The Essential FIFO Starter Checklist

Starting a FIFO career means stepping into a whole new lifestyle—one that requires preparation, resilience, and the right gear. This guide gives you a comprehensive starter checklist so you’re not left scrambling before your first swing.

Essentials to Get Before You Apply

  • White Card – Required for any construction or mine site role.
  • Police Clearance – Ensure it’s current and valid.
  • Resume & Cover Letter – Tailored to FIFO roles with relevant keywords.
  • High-Vis Workwear – Check PPE requirements (most companies provide some gear).
  • Work Boots (Steel Cap) – Must meet site safety standards.
  • Vaccination Records – Especially for remote or company-regulated sites.
  • Medical & Drug Test Clearance – Organised once shortlisted but good to be aware of.

Travel and Roster Preparation

  • Valid Photo ID (Passport or Driver’s Licence)
  • Booked Flights or Transit Info (if self-arranged)
  • Emergency Contact Details Shared with Family
  • Roster Details Noted (2:1, 8:6, etc.)
  • Time-Off Planning – Don’t over-commit socially on your break days.

Packing List for Your First Swing

  • Toiletries (shower gel, toothbrush, sunscreen, razor)
  • Clothes (casual, workwear, sleepwear, thongs, socks)
  • Laundry bag and pegs (some camps are self-serve)
  • Tech gear (phone charger, laptop, headphones)
  • Notebook or journal
  • Snacks (site food can be repetitive)
  • A book or entertainment

Mental & Social Prep

  • Talk to loved ones about communication routines.
  • Set personal goals for each swing.
  • Understand the challenges (boredom, homesickness, fatigue).

Optional But Helpful

  • Download podcasts or movies for offline use.
  • Set financial goals or savings apps.
  • Bring your own pillow or comfort item.

Being well-prepared will not only reduce stress but also leave a strong first impression on your team and supervisor. FIFO work is about more than just turning up—it’s about showing you can handle yourself independently and professionally.
