FIFO isn’t just a job—it can be a long-term career if you know how to grow. Many site workers start in basic roles and climb their way into supervision, operations, or leadership. Here’s how to stand out and move up.

Step 1: Be the Person Everyone Can Rely On

• Show up early, work hard, and follow procedures
• Avoid drama and stay professional
• Take pride in small tasks—they show your attitude

You don’t need to be perfect. You need to be dependable.

Step 2: Upskill Between Swings

Use your time off to get ahead:

• Get your machinery tickets (loader, skid steer, excavator)
• Do Cert III or IV in your area (e.g. OHS, Leadership, Plant Ops)
• Learn basic leadership or communication skills
• Take online WHS or safety training

Small efforts compound—especially when others aren’t putting in any.

Step 3: Let Your Supervisor Know

Tell them you want to learn more or take on extra responsibility. Ask:

“What would I need to do to step into a leading hand or 2IC role?”
“Is there anything I can shadow or help with after shift?”

If they see you’re serious, they’ll remember that when opportunities open.

Step 4: Build a Strong Reputation

• Work well with others—even when it’s tough
• Volunteer for the boring jobs no one wants
• Avoid negative crew or gossip
• Ask questions when you don’t know

Many companies hire from within. If you’ve put in the work, your name should be the first to come up when a new position opens.
